Cholestatic jaundice due to methyldopa.

The occurrence of hepatitis in patients taking methyldopa was first described over 10 years ago (Gillespie et al., 1962). Antihypertensive Metabolites of a-Methyldopa

a-Methyldopa acts through a metabolite in the central nervous system. Of the three metabolites most prominently considered as potential mediators of a-methyldopa hypotension — amethyldopamine, a-methylnorepinephrine (MNE), and a-methylepinephrine (ME) — ME is the most potent depressor agent following intravenous infusion into rats, following injection into the lateral ventricle, and following i...

Degradation of Methyldopa by Banana

Methyldopa, an antihypertensive, is a very close analogue of DOPA. Drug interaction accompanied by degradation in a banana juice mixture was reported for DOPA. However, the effect of banana on methyldopa has not been reported. Therefore, we have investigated the impact of banana juice on methyldopa. The drug and supernatant of banana pulp were mixed, and the mixture was observed for changes in ...

Interaction between levodopa and methyldopa.

The interaction between methyldopa and levodopa was studied in 18 patients with Parkinsonism. Together they produced a fall in blood pressure in doses which when given alone had no effect or only a slight hypotensive effect. Severe hypotension never occurred. It is reasonable to give methyldopa to hypertensive patients on levodopa but the regimen should be initiated in hospital.

Alpha-methyldopa hepatotoxicity in pregnancy.

A 12-week pregnant, 33-year-old African American female, presented with jaundice and change in urine colour. Liver function tests revealed raised transamines and normal alkaline phosphatase. She was started on methyldopa 6 weeks prior to presentation. After initial negative investigations including viral and autoimmune hepatitis, she was given prednisone for methyldopa induced hepatitis. Two we...
